kkat's Review of Rock Star Supernova

My thoughts on Rock Star Supernova, the CBS reality show focused on finding a lead singer for Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke and Jason Newsted. Who will win? Dilana? Lukas? Magni? Storm Large? Toby Rand? Listen to the analysis on my podcast and see if you agree with me.

Don't Call Them Supernova

Tonight's finale held some surprises, not the least of which was that Tommy Lee, Gilby and Jason can't currently call themselves Supernova anymore. Earlier today, a California court issued an injunction preventing them from playing or recording rock music under the Supernova name. This is part of a lawsuit brought by another band already using the Supernova name. Talk about bad timing!

The winner was crowned and let the games begin!

Everyone Gets A Prize

The first night of the finale showcased some excellent rock and roll. The remaining rockers all seem well aware that they are all winners - each one is going to have a good shot at a successful career. And that made for four relaxed, upbeat performers who cranked out some hot music.

Ryan returned and was catapulted into a virtual car commercial while Paula Abdul looked on. That was surreal.

In my mind, Toby is still the front runner - it will be hard for Supernova to pass up his very catchy original. But Lukas, Dilana and Magni all gave strong performances and turned up the heat. I worry that Magni will be eliminated next if he ends up in the bottom two - he does not appear to be a favorite of Tommy Lee's. But if Magni ends up in the top two, it's anyone's guess who will go home.

And Then There Were Four

We're down to the final four rockers in the quest to find a lead singer for Supernova. Each rocker sang one cover song and one original. No one embarrassed themselves. A few of the originals were quite good and one of them just may end up to be the hit single that Supernova is looking for.

Is Supernova souring on Dilana? Will Tommy Lee be willing to let Magni into the band? Will Storm be voted back or will we see Zayra again? Can Lukas slip in and take the prize? Or does Toby have the victory all locked up?

For more thoughts, please listen to this week's podcast.

We Have A Horse Race

The Dilana controversy continues. Too much reality made me think I was watching Big Brother. This was either an effort to make viewers see Dilana hit bottom and resurface as a redeemed figure, or an effort to knock her down a few pegs and open up the competition. Ladies and Gentlemen, we may have a horse race!

Viewers' Choice week finds Lukas and Magni in their comfort zones, Ryan and Toby giving high energy performances, Storm doing her thing with another tough song and Dilana making a really poor choice on Wednesday night.

You can hear my thoughts and predictions in today's podcast.

Only two more weeks left!

If You Can't Say Something Nice

In week 8, Dilana took a beating relating to her not very nice comments about the other rockers. Will this hurt her chances to become Supernova's lead singer?

Patrice and Ryan sang their original songs with varying degrees of success. Patrice ended up with a bloody lip and Ryan had a very red tongue (both of which were left unexplained).

Why did Toby end up in the bottom 3? Was it related to his striptease?

My answers to these questions and other thoughts on Rock Star Supernova can be found in today's podcast.

Introducing...Van Halen?

Supernova's performance with Dilana last Wednesday gave us some insight into their new sound. Ok, maybe "new sound" isn't the best choice of words. I had some late 70s/80s flashbacks and can't help but wonder if Supernova wants to recreate the Van Halen era. Think about it - based on what we heard on Wednesday, is a cover of Running With The Devil that far behind?

Maybe that was just one song and it doesn't reveal all that much. Or maybe it does.

I'll still be watching even though I'd prefer a more alternative sound to their music. Something that Magni, Lukas or Storm could run wild with.

You can hear more about Supernova's sound and who I think will make it to the final by downloading today's podcast.

I'm very curious to see what they sound like this week. And WHO they choose to sing with.

Note: My podcast discussing week 8 will likely be available on August 27th (a bit delayed from the usual schedule).

Is Supernova's Sound Cool or Lame?

After hearing Supernova finally perform (with Dilana) on Wednesday, I was excited that they had at least previewed how they'd come off as a band. But as I've thought about it, I've felt more ambivalent about their sound.

The great thing about the Rock Star show is that you don't have to LOVE the band to get into it. After all, INXS isn't really one of my faves, but I totally enjoyed trying to figure out which singer was right for them. Maybe it's the "matchmaking" that appeals to me.

I was disappointed that Supernova didn't have a heavier sound. I didn't expect them to be particularly alternative but at the same time, I also didn't expect them to be so 80s Top 40 rock. Let's give them a chance - it was only one song. And I really did think they looked like a band up there with Dilana - again, let's give the other rockers a chance and see how they influence the sound.

I have to think some more about this - I plan to post a podcast on Sunday nights with additional thought about our first exposure to Supernova's sound. Please check back for the new podcast.
